Landmannalaugar sits in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, a protected area designated in 1979, in Iceland's southern highlands. Cold mountain runoff from melting snow mixes with naturally heated water rising from underground at the edge of the Laugahraun lava field, which formed in an eruption around 1477, creating a comfortable bathing temperature reported at roughly 36-40°C. The spring is free and unstaffed, and marks the northern trailhead of the multi-day Laugavegur hiking trail.
