Ma'in Hot Springs (Hammamat Ma'in) is a series of roughly 63 mineral hot springs and waterfalls emerging from a canyon in the Madaba Governorate of Jordan, cascading down toward the Dead Sea basin at one of the lowest points on the Earth's surface — approximately 280 metres below sea level. Water reaches the surface at temperatures ranging from 45°C to 60°C, carrying a mineral profile rich in sodium, calcium, chloride, magnesium, and potassium, with dissolved hydrogen sulfide and radon, and drains eventually toward the Dead Sea some 15 kilometres away. The waters are known locally for their soothing, sulphurous character and have long attracted visitors from Madaba and Amman seeking relaxation. Today the site combines several natural waterfall pools open to visitors with a developed resort offering spa facilities built around the springs.
Ma'in Hot Springs sits within a region of Jordan documented as a site of thermal bathing since antiquity, part of the broader network of Dead Sea-area hot springs referenced by classical writers including Josephus, whose accounts describe the thermal springs of the eastern Dead Sea shore as sought-after destinations during the Herodian period. While the closest-documented royal visit — by Herod the Great — is associated with the nearby springs of Callirrhoe rather than Ma'in itself, the broader Zerqa Ma'in valley has been recognized as a site of therapeutic bathing for over two thousand years, and Ma'in's waters continue that long regional tradition today.
For Jordanians, Ma'in Hot Springs is one of the country's most recognizable natural wellness destinations, a popular day-trip and overnight retreat combined with visits to Madaba's Byzantine mosaics and the nearby Dead Sea. The image of hot mineral water cascading down a canyon wall into open-air pools, framed by the stark desert landscape of the Jordan Rift Valley, is one of the most photographed natural scenes in Jordanian tourism.
The springs are fed by deep geothermal circulation along the Dead Sea Transform fault system, a geological feature that has sustained a consistent thermal water supply for millennia. As with other sites along the tectonically active Jordan Rift Valley, the springs' output is governed by deep crustal processes largely unaffected by surface climate, though regional water management and resort development remain ongoing considerations for the site's long-term stewardship.
