Sky Lagoon opened in 2021 on the Kársnes peninsula in Kópavogur, just south of Reykjavik, on a site where the basalt lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula end at the sea. Its central feature is a 70-metre-long geothermal lagoon with an infinity edge that appears to dissolve into the North Atlantic. The water is heated by Iceland's geothermal grid to around 38–40°C and is lightly mineralized with silica and trace minerals from the lava field aquifer system. The facility was designed to offer a more intimate alternative to the Blue Lagoon — smaller, quieter, and integrated more directly into the coastal geology. A ritual bathing sequence called 'the Seven Steps' structures the Sky Lagoon experience: warm lagoon, cold plunge, sauna, cold mist, sky body scrub, steam, and warm shower. The site's infinity edge faces southwest, meaning sunset views extend directly over the Atlantic, making it particularly dramatic during Iceland's long summer evenings.

The Kársnes peninsula sits within the geothermal zone of the Reykjanes volcanic system, which has been continuously active since Iceland was first settled by Norse explorers in the 9th century. Geothermal bathing has been a central feature of Icelandic life since before the time of the sagas — the Landnámabók (Book of Settlements, 12th century) records thermal pools as gathering places for dispute resolution and social exchange. Sky Lagoon is part of a long tradition of purpose-built thermal bathing facilities that began with Iceland's public 'sundlaugar' in the early 20th century.

La relación de Islandia con el agua geotérmica no tiene parangón con la de ningún otro país: toda la red energética, todo el suministro de agua caliente de la mayoría de los hogares y la cultura al aire libre de la población están moldeados por ella. Sostenibilidad
Sky Lagoon funciona enteramente con la red geotérmica e hidroeléctrica de Islandia, por lo que sus emisiones netas de carbono son insignificantes. El establecimiento recicla continuamente su agua y no utiliza productos químicos para el calentamiento. El emplazamiento de Kársnestangi se eligió, en parte, por su integración con un corredor de infraestructura geotérmica ya existente que recorría la costa de Kópavogur.
Sustainability
Sky Lagoon is powered entirely by Iceland's geothermal and hydroelectric grid — net carbon emissions are negligible. The facility recycles its water continuously and uses no chemicals for heating. The Kársnestangi site was selected partly for its integration with an existing geothermal utility infrastructure corridor that already ran along the Kópavogur coastline.
