Sundhollin is the oldest of Reykjavik's public swimming pools, built in 1937 and designed by architect Guðjón Samúelsson in a neo-classical style. The facility draws its water entirely from the geothermal system beneath the capital, a volcanic hot spring network that heats nearly all of Reykjavik's buildings and public pools. Both an indoor pool and outdoor hot pots — the traditional Icelandic communal soaking tubs — are available. For Icelanders, the neighbourhood pool (sundlaug) is a social institution as much as a leisure facility — a place for community conversation, news, and daily ritual regardless of season or weather.

Patrimonio
Heritage
Sundhollin opened in 1937 as one of the first modern geothermal public facilities in Iceland, part of a national effort to make geothermal energy available to urban residents. The neo-classical building is a listed heritage structure in Reykjavik.
Cultura
Culture
The Icelandic hot pot (heitur pottur) culture is distinctive worldwide — outdoor geothermal tubs where strangers discuss politics, local gossip, and daily life regardless of temperature outside. Sundhollin is one of the most authentic expressions of this culture in the capital.
Sostenibilidad
Sustainability
All of Reykjavik's public pools are geothermally heated at near-zero carbon cost, representing one of the world's most sustainable urban bathing systems. Sundhollin's water is entirely renewable, drawn from the same geothermal field that heats the city's homes.
