Nauthólsvík opened as a public geothermal beach on June 17, 2000, on a cove near Reykjavík's city center. Genuine geothermal water from the city's district-heating supply is pumped into a partially enclosed lagoon and two hot tubs, warming the cove to roughly 15-19°C in summer while the hot tubs run close to 38.5°C. A golden sand beach, changing facilities, and lifeguard supervision make it popular with locals, tourists, and year-round cold-water swimmers.
