Termas de Pedras Salgadas is located in Bornes de Aguiar, Vila Pouca de Aguiar, at 580 meters altitude, and draws from a hypersaline, gasocarbonic (naturally sparkling), bicarbonated, sodic and ferruginous spring emerging at about 17°C with a pH of 6.4. Commercial exploitation began in 1871, and the resort gained royal patronage from Portugal's 19th-century monarchy, including visits associated with Queen Maria Pia of Savoy and Kings Ferdinand II and Carlos I. The historic spa building was later restored by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, and the surrounding park today combines a bottling operation, eco-houses, and thermal treatment facilities.
Commercial exploitation of the springs began in 1871, and the resort became fashionable with Portugal's royal family, including visits linked to Queen Maria Pia of Savoy and Kings Ferdinand II and Carlos I. The water won an international distinction in Vienna around 1873. The historic spa building was later restored by Pritzker-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira.
