Dolenjske Toplice sits over a system of tectonic faults in southeastern Slovenia's Dolenjska region, where groundwater penetrates deep into the crust, heats naturally, and returns to the surface at about 36°C with a flow of roughly 30 liters per second. The lightly mineralized, calcium-magnesium bicarbonate water has been valued for its healing properties for centuries, with the first formal bath house built in 1658 under the Counts of Auersperg. Today the Terme Krka group operates the resort's Balnea and Vital wellness centers, drawing on the same natural spring for pools, balneotherapy, and rehabilitation programs.
The spa's first bath house was built in 1658 by the Counts of Auersperg, whose nearby Dolenjske Toplice castle (now a hotel) anchors the historic town center. The waters were noted for their healing reputation for generations before formal development.
