Laško's healing waters were known in antiquity, and an 1818 newspaper report recorded the springs' temperature at 35°C, an announcement that triggered systematic development by the engineer Rödel between 1852 and 1854, with a ceremonial opening in May 1854. Three named springs — the Emperor's, Franz's, and Joseph's — fed the original facility, called Kaiser Franz Josef Bad after the Austrian emperor. The low-mineralized, akratothermal water today runs 32–35°C. A Viennese professor named Stein expanded the resort with social facilities from 1857, and in 1953 the site was formally registered as a medical rehabilitation center; it now operates as Thermana Laško.

Heritage

Originally developed as the 'Kaiser Franz Josef Bad,' named for the Austrian emperor, the resort's three historic springs (Emperor's, Franz's, and Joseph's) date its formal development to 1852–1854. In 1882 the site built what is described as the first hydroelectric power plant on Slovene soil.
