Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa opened on 15 June 2023, officially opened by then Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, on the shores of Lake Rotorua. It is owned by the local Ngāti Whakaue iwi, who describe it as embodying the reason Rotorua was first settled as a geothermal city. The spa draws mineral-rich water directly from the Rotorua geothermal field, with pools reported to range from about 30°C to 41°C alongside a cold plunge and ice room. Its multi-stage 'Restorative Journey' experience incorporates geothermal pools, mineral mud and herbal bathing with indigenous plants, built around Māori healing traditions and manaakitanga (hospitality and care).
Wai Ariki is owned and developed by Ngāti Whakaue, the iwi (tribe) whose territory includes central Rotorua, and is built on the same geothermal field long used by the iwi's ancestors. The facility draws from the same source as the Rachel Spring at the neighbouring, long-established Polynesian Spa.
Wai Ariki frames its bathing experience explicitly around Māori cultural practice, describing itself as New Zealand's only luxury Māori cultural spa and building its treatments around manaakitanga (hospitality and care) and the traditional healing practices of Ngāti Whakaue.
